Carriers paid CZK 8.5 billion in tolls in the first half of the year, up 13.5% year-on-year

Prague, 11 July 2024 – Toll collections for using roads and motorways by lorries grew throughout the first half of this year. In June, carriers paid a total of CZK 1.462 billion, almost a tenth more than in June 2023. Toll collections for the first half of the year exceeded CZK 8.5 billion.

Nevertheless, freight traffic fell slightly in June. The number of toll transactions processed was 4 percent lower year-on-year and only slightly exceeded 98 million transactions. The increase in toll collection is thus due to the change in toll rates from March 2024 and a higher share of motorway journeys.

The CO2 air pollution charge introduced this year brought in almost CZK 221 million in June (approximately 15% of the total collection). In June, the tolls for using roads amounted to almost CZK 1.173 billion (80% of the toll revenues). The remaining CZK 68 million can be attributed to the fee for external costs caused by noise and air pollution.

89% of the total toll collection was for motorway tolls (CZK 7.546 billion). The remaining 11% was paid by carriers for driving on 1st category toll roads (CZK 968 million). From March to the end of June, carriers paid almost CZK 865 million for air pollution caused by CO2 emissions.

At the end of first half of the year, 859 thousand vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons were registered in the electronic toll system, of which 680 thousand vehicles had foreign license plate numbers. For these registered vehicles, CzechToll issued 654 thousand on-board units to carriers.
